My Poetry

This poem won third place in a contest run by the National Library of Poetry, so I guess someone thinks I'm a good writer!

Epiphany (within me)

Song
Let it ripple, let it scream, let it soar
Music
Mind floating in it, throat longing for it
Silent scream
Raging beneath the barrier of a
Closed mouth
Waiting
Until the silence of aloneness
Then
Freedom, oh help me I'm drowning in
Freedom
(Let it ripple, let it scream, let it soar)

I wrote this poem for school. It's based on Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern novels.

Dragon Dreams

A dragon in the sky
A dragon with glowing eyes
A dragon breathing flame
A dragon swooping down
A dragon of green
A dragon of blue
A dragon of brown
A dragon of bronze catching a golden queen
A dragon soaring on the wind
A dragon queen protecting her eggs
A dragon breaking his shell
A dragon defending his rider
A dragon winking between
A dragon splashing in a lake
A dragon trumpeting from a mountain
A dragon sharing a quiet moment with his rider
A dragon of blue courting a green
A dragon humming in delight
A dragon bellowing angrily
A dragon flaming Thread
A dragon of Anne McCaffrey's mind
A dragon of my own

I'm a Civil War nut, so it's no surprise that my personal favorite poems are set in that time period. The first one I wrote for school; we had to look at a picture and write a poem about it. You can see the picture and read a little about it by clicking this link.

The second poem I think I wrote for another contest, but it didn't win.

Richmond Grays

I stand among my comrades
Of the First Virginia Militia
And think
How long will we all be together?
Who will be lost from day to day
From battle to battle
From the "Richmond Grays"?

I stand among my comrades
Of the First Virginia Militia
And think
Of all the ways a life can be lost
Cannon and gunfire and bayonet
And gangrene and starvation in the prison camps
And I hope it doesn't happen to me

I stand among my comrades
Of the First Virginia Militia
And think
That no matter what the risks and fears
We will continue to fight
For our lives, our liberty, our happiness
And maybe--someday--
We will gain them.

Chance Meeting

I stand alone
At the edge of a field
Watching
My companions are there
In the middle of the field
Dying
You come behind me
At the edge of the field
Creeping
I turn and see you
At the edge of the field
Walking
You look beyond me
In the middle of the field
Thinking
Then you nod
And I nod
And you continue on your way
Just a chance meeting
Between the blue and the gray
